I am now well into February and the business, as new as it is, is in motion.
Traffic has been targeted and driven, sales have been generated and – I have had a lot of sleepless nights.
This is not an easy journey.
There are obviously a number of challenges and they will likely be different to each one of you, but to me if I had to whittle it down to the few that rear their heads most frequently for various reasons, they will be as follows:
- Overwhelm/where do I start?
- Fear of failure/success
- Worrying about perfection
Looking over the short list – I realise that you could bunch all three of those items into a general heading of – Worry.
Worrying (not a healthy or productive state to be in).
So- how do I deal with day to day activities of attempting to run a startup online business, while at the same time combating the mental state of worrying, usually about events or tasks that are not even important to the job at hand.
Well there are numerous websites that need to be looked at and in no particular order, they included topics such as,
- Mental Health
- Mood Improvement
- Working Smart
Straight away I discovered that the easiest way to improve my 3 main issues from the beginning, is to simply get enough sleep. Of course this is easier said than done, especially if you are worried to start with- I should add, occasionally the sleeplessness is just caused due to my over-excitement at a peak in traffic or a recent sale.
Our family life and house size make it a little bit tricky for me to disappear off to a vacant wing of the house to be alone with my thoughts. My time in the bathroom is disrupted if I’m longer than 60 seconds!
I noticed that other elements are directly linked to one another. If my mental health or mood is good or high, my productivity and focus will be in-tune and spot on. Working smart (this means different things to different people) for me is generally not overcomplicating a task too much, automating where possible, and looking at the fallout (if any) after I have setup the framework. I do need to fine tune this a bit more.
Worrying about perfection is a major stumbling block for me, and I know it is an issue for many other people who need to be self-motivated. I often notice in the Facebook groups that indecision can be one barrier that you put in front of yourself to prevent success, when all you need to do (according to my Mentor and numerous young and old before him) is to take massive action. Or any action when it comes down to it. Positive is ideal.
Believe it or not- I am native to the UK, and my written English is questionable. I’m OK with that (just about), because it is very difficult to make improvements if you don’t know where your flaws are (regarding written English only). You need to make the decision to choose action and eventual success with possible criticism, or sit back and do nothing wondering what could have been.
One final note on this post, the edit button will be well used by me as I retrain my writing skills. But feel free to point out something that you might like me to look at.
I thought I would provide a summary of how I have been promoting a program I’m involved with on Facebook and Twitter. The results are mixed, I have used paid adverts and organic traffic.
